Open Source: The Drawback of CodeCanyon
Congrats on that! It's awesome to see developers make money doing what they love to do. At the same time however, I find I am conflicted. On the one hand, making money is great, on the other hand I really like free/open source software. Making money isn't the issue here, it's more specific than that. The issue is that they seem to be making money by using proprietary licenses.
Fortunately, the licensing terms used on CodeCanyon has a section that allows the GNU General Public License to be used in place of the regular/extended licenses:
If the whole, or part, of the Work has been created using materials which are the subject of a GNU General Public License (GPL), your use of the Work (or part Work) is subject to the specific terms of the GPL in place of the foregoing conditions (to the extent the GPL applies).
You can make money while licensing your work under the GNU GPL. There are Wordpress theme designers who use the GPL and make money. I hope that more developers on CodeCanyon take note of this and start using the GPL more than they do currently!
It would also be nice if CodeCanyon allowed you to filter out any software that wasn't GPL licensed.
